What is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is a device that recovers large volumes of low grade heat from the environment and converts it into a lower volume of higher grade heat. The high temperature output is used to heat water, which in turn will heat underfloor heating, radiators and domestic hot water.

Have you noticed how hot the back of fridge gets? A heat pump uses exactly the same technology that is familiar to all of us in the form of a refrigerator. The fridge removes the heat from the inside, thus chilling the cabinet, and discharges it through a heat exchanger on the outside. A heat pump behaves like an "inside out fridge", heating your home by extracting heat from the ground or air.

Heat pumps run on electricity, but their principal of operation makes them highly efficient. For every unit of electricity that goes into a heat pump, around 4 units of heat are given out.

Air Source Heat Pumps

As the name suggests, Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) recover heat from the external air. The unit can be positioned outside or inside the building with ducting to provide air flow from the outside.

ASHPs work effectively in conditions as cold as -20°C and their efficiency increases with the air temperature. The air-temperatures experienced in Northern UK are ideal for the effective use of Air Source Heat Pumps - which do not require large areas of ground to be excavated, or the drilling of boreholes.

Ground Source Heat Pumps

The sub-surface soil temperature is stable throughout the year in Northern Europe. A Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) taps into this heat source by circulating a chilled solution through pipes beneath the soil.

The pipes can be arranged in a horizontal array, or vertically within boreholes. The heat pump unit is installed within the building - a garage or utility room is ideal. The size of "ground collector", area of ground, or depth of boreholes required is dependent upon the heating requirement of the property. Every one of our ground collector arrays is individually designed to ensure effective circulation and optimum efficiency.

Installation Service

Earthwise Scotland Ltd do a lot more than design and simply supplying a heat pump unit. We install the complete system that we have designed, which may include boreholes or a ground loop.

Our flexible approach to equipment installation allows us to fit in with the building or refurbishment programme providing a seamless and trouble free installation process.

As with any heating system, the Underfloor Heating, Radiators and Hot Water Cylinder should be suitable for the method of heat production.

Earthwise Scotland Ltd provides bespoke, fully integrated solutions incorporating design and installation of these components with our Heat Pump systems.

Grants

Having achieved a high level of Accreditation for both Ground Source and Air Source Heat pumps, we can assist our customers in accessing various grant schemes.
